Biography

Kris Walker started at IGPP in Oct. 2003 as a Post Graduate Researcher. He received his bachelor's degree in geophysics from the University of Delaware in 1998, and his master's and doctorate degree in geophysics from Stanford University in 2000 and 2003, respectively. As a student, he cultivated an interest in applying both active- and passive-source seismological techniques to studying tectonic and geodynamic processes at lithospheric scales. Working with Mark Zumberge and Peter Shearer, Kris is now looking at ways to combine global seismic and infrasound data to search for natural and anthropogenic events that emit energy into the Earth's atmosphere and crust. Potential sources include meteorite impacts, explosive volcanic eruptions, and nuclear explosions.

Kris Walker is also working with Mark Zumberge and John Blum in testing the Optical Fiber Infrasound Sensor (OFIS) located at Piñon Flat Observatory. Their goal is to find the best method for calculating the backazimuth to a specific event, and the optimum number and orientation of OFIS's in order to make this calculation.
